Warrior Guides Community Service 12/01/12
The Warrior Guides made a great impact on the City of Chester on Saturday, December 1st as they served together at seven different non-profit agencies in the City. Over 100 pairs of kids met at Widener Partnership Charter School in the morning, formed into seven groups and dispersed throughout the city. Ten pairs walked to Palmer House and ten pairs walked to Stinson Towers. Both are senior living centers. The Warrior Guides and their Braves decorated the lobbies and community rooms of the buildings and then put on a Christmas show which included caroling and the reading of the biblical account of Jesus’ birth. Then both groups were treated to a nice Christmas reception.
A third group walked to the Delaware County Pregnancy Center where they did some dusting, vacuuming, and also filled some baby bottles for new moms. A fourth group cleaned out a storage closet and reorganized it at Widener Partnership Charter School.
A fifth group stayed behind at WPCS and worked on a craft project for the Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired. The kids made a fleece hat and scarf set for each of the clients in their program. The beautiful sets were delivered to the residents on Wednesday, December 5th by a few Braves who also gave the clients a small reception and shared warm wishes for the holidays.
One of the largest groups of children took a bus to Bennett Gardens, a community garden owned and operated by Chester Housing Authority. These 60 kids weeded and raked, composed the dead grass and then winterized the garden. They also painted ceramic tiles for the garden and also distributed flyers to CHA residents, sharing information with them about upcoming events.
Finally, our last group headed over to City Team Ministries where they donated bags and bags of food and then sorted and organized food and clothing for the large Christian organization which feeds and clothes the homeless in the City of Chester.
After hours of serving side-by-side in Chester, the kids all reconvened back at WPCS where they enjoyed a catered lunch, provided by some very generous friends of the Andrew L. Hicks, Jr. Foundation and there was still time for great games in the gym and then a holiday gift exchange. The day was a filled with hard work, humble service, grateful hearts and huge smiles! The children are becoming close friends and really enjoying the time they spend together!
