2011-2012 HHS Warrior Guides Mentoring Club
“Shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’” 1 Peter 5: 2-5
Henderson High School has established a brand new mentoring program, called Warrior Guides with the support and encouragement of the Andrew L. Hicks, Jr. Foundation. The founding members of the club are: Savannah Knisely, Rebecca Rodgers, Morgan Daugherty and Kelly Hicks. The goal of the Warrior Guides program is to provide an opportunity to individual Henderson High School students to be a significant influence on the life of a Chester middle school student who may need supplemental support, friendship or encouragement. Membership in the club comes with distinct responsibilities. Each high school student will be expected to participate in at least 5 organized, community events with their Chester mentee. These events can be Andrew L. Hicks, Jr. Foundation activities; but they are not limited to Foundation events. The club may create their own events, and the Foundation may simply choose to fund those activities as they line up with the goals of the Foundation.
89 high school students have committed to be mentors to fifth and sixth graders from Widener Partnership School, sixth and seventh graders from Chester Community Charter School, and fifth graders from Chester Upland School of the Arts and Frederick Douglass Christian School. In addition to the 5 events, each high school student will be expected to initiate 3 “personal touches” which are private communications with their mentee (such as mailing a birthday card or calling their friend to check on their academic progress). The club also hopes to create a culminating activity at the end of the school year such as a “Shadowing Day” or a trip to Hershey Park for all of the mentors and their mentees.
Any mentor turning 18 years old prior to 9/1/12 will be required to have a Criminal Background Check done ($10) as well as a Child Abuse Clearance ($10) and their name will be run against the Megan’s Law National Sexual Offenders Registry.
