Fall Carnival 2012 10/27/12

This year the Andrew L. Hicks, Jr. Foundation partnered with the City of Chester Safe Homes and Lead Poison Prevention Program as well as Chester’s Department of Recreation to put on its 3rd Annual Fall Carnival on Saturday, October 27th.  The event was an overwhelming success, serving over 500 children in Chester.

The day began at 10am with the Lead Poison Prevention Walk and some activities immediately afterwards.  The Andrew L. Hicks, Jr. Foundation arrived at 11:30am and set up the Carnival, led by seniors Katie Kirkman, Jake Lasco, Courtney Kirkman and Derek Matonti, with supervision from Foundation Board Member, Jamie Wagner and HHS teacher Laura Fredd-Maxwell.   Over 70 Henderson High School students spent the day working on various pieces of the Carnival.  Many students were responsible for giving away books, the carnival games, field games, face painting, tattoos and pumpkin painting on over 500 pumpkins!

Other students were involved with serving the food to the crowds.  500 hot dogs were cooked and served with chips and drinks, and other goodies provided by the partnering organizations.  Many other students were responsible for chaperoning the inflatables.  The Chester children loved all of the activities that we had available for them.

The Henderson High School Dance Team graciously gave up hours of their day to dance for the crowd.  The DJ was fantastic as he encouraged the crowd to join in and hundreds of people were on the black top dancing together.  The Chester Fire Department also participated by bringing their Smoke House, demonstrating the proper way to escape a home that is filled with smoke or on fire.  Many other community partners were also there, displaying their information on tables and giving out trinkets to represent their organization.

Everyone who attended had a fantastic time!  It was a gorgeous day and a wonderful chance for the community of Chester and students from West Chester to get to know each other even better.  We can’t wait for next year!
